The pace of scientific discovery
For most of human history, scientific knowledge accumulated in fits and starts. A Greek philosopher might propose a model of the cosmos that would persist, unchallenged, for over a thousand years. Medieval scholars often spent their careers reconciling ancient texts rather than producing new observations. What changed in the seventeenth century was not merely the invention of new instruments โ the telescope, the microscope, the air pump โ but the emergence of a community of investigators who agreed to share their results and submit them to scrutiny. The experimental method, as practiced by figures like Boyle and Hooke at the early Royal Society, treated knowledge as provisional. A claim was only as good as the experiment that produced it, and any experiment had to be reproducible by skeptical witnesses. This shift from authority to evidence is often described as the Scientific Revolution, but it might more accurately be called the institutional revolution. The discoveries that followed were extraordinary, but the durable innovation was a social arrangement that made discovery cumulative rather than episodic.
