Computer Evaluations for an Architecture Firm
A practical buying guide for a modern architecture practice — CAD/BIM workstations, a cheaper drafting tier, shared file server & backup, network, large-format plotter support, and the 10-million-color Mimaki 3D printer — organized by firm size so you buy for the office you have (and the one you're growing into).
How to read this. Pick the tier that matches your seat count. Each tier lists a full BIM/render seat, a cheaper drafting seat, the server/NAS + backup for multi-site sync, network, and what it takes to drive a plotter and the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 color 3D printer.
Rule of thumb: Revit and AutoCAD reward high CPU clock speed first, then RAM; rendering, point clouds, and color 3D-print prep reward a big-VRAM GPU. Don't overspend on cores for drafting; don't underspend on GPU/RAM for production BIM.
🪑 Solo & Small Studio — 1 to 5 seats
A principal plus a few staff. One shared drawing set, light coordination, mostly one or two people in the heavy 3D model at a time. Keep infrastructure minimal; put the money in one or two strong seats.

🖨️ Large-format plotter support
A plotter is undemanding on the host — it needs a reliable spooler and enough disk for big plot files, not a fast GPU. What machine drives it depends on how many people print:
- Solo / small: Drive a 24–36" plotter directly from a workstation over USB or network. Install the plotter's HP-GL/2 or PostScript driver on that seat.
- Growing / multi-site: Put the plotter on the network and host the print queue on the file server or a small print-server VM. Every seat prints to a shared queue with standardized page setups — no per-machine driver drift. Add a RIP only if you plot color renders/presentation boards, not just line-work sheets.
- Hardware (not in the current quotes): HP DesignJet T-series (T950 / T1700) or Canon imagePROGRAF TX — 24" to 44" roll-fed. Budget a service/consumables plan separately.
🎨 Mimaki 3DUJ-553 — 10-million-color 3D printer
This is the demanding peripheral. The 3DUJ-553 is a full-color UV-inkjet printer that produces physical models in up to 10 million colors from textured CAD — the standout "wow" deliverable for client presentations. The printer itself is separate; what your computers need to do is prepare and RIP the color models, which is CPU-, RAM-, and storage-heavy.
What the host machine needs

⚠️ Confirm before you commit
The plotter and the Mimaki-class color 3D printer are not covered by the current Dell/Autodesk quotes. The quoted workstations can absolutely drive them, but you still need the vendors to confirm:
- Exact Mimaki 3D LINK / RIP software version and the ICC/color-managed workflow.
- The plotter's driver + optional RIP and where the print queue lives.
- Service & consumables plans for both devices — these are ongoing costs the hardware quotes don't include.

The Dell bundle also included 4× Dell U2724D monitors, 2 dual-monitor arms, a Xerox C325/DNI color laser all-in-one (check-prints), and a Buffalo TeraStation 16 TB NAS — a sensible Tier 1/2 shared drive.
Bottom line. Standardize on Autodesk AEC + Forma for software and Dell Pro Max Tower T2–class machines for production seats and Mimaki prep. Fill out the rest of the office with standard BIM seats and cheaper drafting seats, size shared storage and backup to the tier, and treat the plotter and 10-million-color 3D printer as a confirm-with-vendor line item on top of the compute.
